This is the story of a 79-year-old man with no prior record, charged federally with Traveling with Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse of Minors. He was caught up in a sting operation for a fake “sex tourism” trip.
The video told the true story of the grief, mental distress and “imperfect entrapment” by undercover agents that all contributed to the commission of the offense. The sentencing guidelines, prosecutor, and probation officer all sought a term of eleven years in prison. The judge, in what may have been the biggest departure in his career, sentenced him two years.
